The gasp sound effects somehow made the reveals worse. Huge buildup to reveal an apron with a crappy little logo on it, and the crowd reacts like someone fell off the trapeze.
Yeah, [that crowd gasp](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5eaDhCVNJU) gets around. I’m pretty sure there is some royalty free sound effects library that has been passed around since the 60s.
Cook books are actually one of the biggest scams in publishing, bots can write them by copying free recipes online and its very difficult for original publishers to prove or seek damages because its not like they invented how to cook beef enchiladas or whatever
This shit was used in the original Smash Bros. on the N64 whenever a player managed to escape falling out of the map. It’s such an old, outdated sample.
How does this even get on tv? The gasping was only the cherry on top. The entire thing is beyond hyperbole. This clip as a whole is like a big fat smirking nightmare. How in the living fuck does this even come together? I just can’t even fathom how things have become this exaggerated.
This particular sound effect has been around for quite some time… There are also a series of yells that always appear in movies as an “inside joke”. I wish someone would put a website together with all of these common sound effects or perhaps make a mobile app so I can incorporate the sounds into my everyday life. That would be great.
MasterChef started out as the nice little cooking show in the UK. Then they created an Aussie version which included all this bullshit and sensationalism, and ruined it. But the ratings went through the roof. This is what we have now.
It’s such an inappropriate sound for this scenario. Seriously this is the gasp you play when some kind of insane sexual abuse is revealed to an audience, not when they get to see this years masterchef apron…
I want to love this, but watch Forensic Files or The New Detectives and take a drink every time you hear the same dispatch clip “all units …….transmit on tac one”
It’s been in dozens of movies and TV shows, it’s like the Wilhelm Scream of gasps.
Listen closely, there is a 4th copy of it as the crowd begins to “cheer” around 1.5 seconds on the clock (cheering at the cookbook announcement). It’s been faded into the applause and cheers, possibly stretched or cut but it was used as a transient of sorts for that round of cheering.
I used to love this show. I don’t know if it was my young naivety or just a phase, but this show has succumbed into some of the worst hack-job reality I’ve ever seen. The fact that people watch it and think the dramatic endings to the cooking is real and buy the sound effects of thunderous applause makes me feel superior somehow. I’m talking real /r/iamverysmart material floating in my head
I have been to a MasterChef filming before. They film all the reactions and sounds before the show starts, as well as redo parts of the audio that had issues from previous shows. The reactions can include laughter, suspense, surprise, and reactions to food that looks delicious.
I went to school for sound design and foley, and I know first hand that sound designers have a peculiar sense of humor. They love to troll. Ever hear of the Wilhelm Scream? I promise you that this *Gasp* sound effect is not an accident, and it is not there because the producers are tasteless either. It is there because the sound designer knows that most people (including the producers of the show) don’t listen closely enough to really pick up funny sound effects like this, and even if they hear it they don’t necessarily understand that it is a joke to begin with. I can almost guarantee you that the sound engineer who worked on this episode probably had a huge grin on his face when he was positioning these *Gasp*s at just the right moment, and he would probably bust out laughing if he saw that his work made it onto reddit.
I love how when they reveal the apron it cuts to a lady in the crowd on the verge of tears. I can’t even imagine what her reaction will be when she finds out you can buy one of those aprons on amazon for 16 dollars.
I wonder if this is Gordon ramses team. I love watching hells kitchen on Netflix, but the creepy horror wind chime noise is uses like 10 times each episode. It’s really off-putting.
I have heard this sound effect countless times.
There’s one sound clip that makes physically angry whenever I hear it… surprisingly it’s all the time. It’s called the diddy laugh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yedSDFtSmJw
The target audience for this stuff are morons who like cooking, but are still, essentially morons. They need melodrama and fakery so they don’t lose focus and stick around for the commercials.
To be honest working in TV this is either a lazy editor and/or sound mixer, OR playing devils advocate, they were so pushed for time to get this to air that they just had to chuck the most basic shit in. Hilarious to watch though lol
American TV is extremely over dramatic. There’s really no need for all the fast cuts and thumping music. Compare this to the UK version and it just seems tacky. Not that I’m saying UK TV is better or whatever but in this instance it’s certainly cooler. Less is more sometimes
The gasp sound effects somehow made the reveals worse. Huge buildup to reveal an apron with a crappy little logo on it, and the crowd reacts like someone fell off the trapeze.
There’s one one fucking possible reaction to this sort of blatant bullshit from a beloved company: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5eaDhCVNJU
Yeah, [that crowd gasp](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5eaDhCVNJU) gets around. I’m pretty sure there is some royalty free sound effects library that has been passed around since the 60s.
Those glasses are so fucking ridiculous.
I’ve watched enough master chef to know that before each box was revealed, they went to commercial.
American editing gives me a headache
This is not at all recent. Even this associated Youtube clip is from 2012.
Don’t forget the [U.S. Kitchen Nightmares sound](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeahDDyFhWY).
Why is anyone still watching broadcast TV in general, and “reality” shows in particular?!
I can’t stand gasping it makes me cringe.
Cook books are actually one of the biggest scams in publishing, bots can write them by copying free recipes online and its very difficult for original publishers to prove or seek damages because its not like they invented how to cook beef enchiladas or whatever
Ah, the wilhelm gasp.
I cannot watch stuff like this.. over the top enthusiasm, screaming and letting out all sorts of sound and ridiculous behavior.
The same goes for being a fan or have a ‘favourite’ somebody or thing.
How did this post trigger my lack of emotions? Or do I have too many?
Great, bye.
Was this the same sound effect used in super smash bros?
why can’t we move past the slow, drawn out reveal and just make compelling, exciting shows that keep our attention because of the content?
I bet you the editors are taking the piss at this point because they too are sick of it.
Source: I am a TV Editor
Whenever I hear that sound I think of Super Smash Bros. Melee.
This shit was used in the original Smash Bros. on the N64 whenever a player managed to escape falling out of the map. It’s such an old, outdated sample.
MasterChef is staged.
How does this even get on tv? The gasping was only the cherry on top. The entire thing is beyond hyperbole. This clip as a whole is like a big fat smirking nightmare. How in the living fuck does this even come together? I just can’t even fathom how things have become this exaggerated.
Behold. A TOWEL.
*gasp* and cheer
This isn’t a joke?
Wow, I didn’t realize that sound was so overused until I watched this. It’s almost as annoying as the Wilhelm scream. Almost.
They just got so excited for a plain white apron with a tiny logo on it
Why I can’t stand American reality shows.
Japanese TV does it all the time on every show.
American Masterchef is fucking obnoxious.
Holy shit an apron
theres a forth used at the 30 second mark right as they transition into the fake clap whistle track that they also use several times.

I’ve heard this sound effect in San Francisco Rush on N64… in 1998.
It’s such an inappropriate sound for this scenario. Seriously this is the gasp you play when some kind of insane sexual abuse is revealed to an audience, not when they get to see this years masterchef apron…
Another repeated sound effect at [0:06](https://youtu.be/LMgOW5psrYo?t=6), [0:39](https://youtu.be/LMgOW5psrYo?t=39), and [1:31](https://youtu.be/LMgOW5psrYo?t=91)
I want to love this, but watch Forensic Files or The New Detectives and take a drink every time you hear the same dispatch clip “all units …….transmit on tac one”
make cooking shows great again
I’m amazed people actually sit through entire episodes of this show
It’s been in dozens of movies and TV shows, it’s like the Wilhelm Scream of gasps.

“But there’s one final box.”
*opens box to reveal another smaller box*

(gasp)
Wow American drama sucks

It’s like the game show from that hard hitting documentary, Requiem for a Dream.
I wonder if this is Gordon ramses team. I love watching hells kitchen on Netflix, but the creepy horror wind chime noise is uses like 10 times each episode. It’s really off-putting.
The over the top score and editing on these trash hooplehead shows is absurd in general.
The one thing that always made me wonder about especially american shows is, how suicidal are the people having to edit this shit?
Like do you enjoy suffering that much?
I have heard this sound effect countless times.
There’s one sound clip that makes physically angry whenever I hear it… surprisingly it’s all the time. It’s called the diddy laugh.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yedSDFtSmJw
I thought the second box was going to be cocaine
I read that as Master Chief and was pleasantly surprised haha.
The target audience for this stuff are morons who like cooking, but are still, essentially morons. They need melodrama and fakery so they don’t lose focus and stick around for the commercials.
Blame the audience, not the creators.
I absolutely hate reality TV, and this minute of TV has ensured I won’t be watching any free-to-air TV for the rest of my life.
I swear the first Toy Story PC game overused this exact sound effect.
Reason # 376 I never watch “tv” anymore.
I wonder how much of the other crowd/cheering sounds are also added in, sounds like almost all of them honestly.
American TV really is horse shit sometimes.
that sfx is in smash bros when you have a close miss
It’s the ideal complement to the artless condescension and pandering of American television.
To be honest working in TV this is either a lazy editor and/or sound mixer, OR playing devils advocate, they were so pushed for time to get this to air that they just had to chuck the most basic shit in. Hilarious to watch though lol
TIL how utterly shit Master Chef is in the US.
They still use the letdown dwindling whine noise. https://youtu.be/kQJHYFK3LTQ
