  1. As someone who spent many years in Africa, I find it extremely unlikely this is the first time they’ve heard a fiddle. Everyone has access to a radio, everyone has grown up to many kinds of music. They often play western music of all types. They may seem poor and so on, but they probably have local public schools they attend and have heard music like this.

What is unique to them is likely having someone play a string instrument like this in person, particularly a white person which some kids might not have seen in person, or at least seen this close and is interacting with them.

I find all of the “Africans see or hear [THIS] for the first time” to largely perpetuate the false stereotype that they are all living in tiny huts in far away villages, unexposed to the world. This just is not the case for 95% of the continent anymore.

They are poor, their access to such things is minimal, and they may not have similar luxuries, but it doesn’t mean they’re all Bush men.

A better title would be “African children hear and dance with a fiddle player IN PERSON for the first time.”
