The food we were born to eat: John McDougall at TEDxFremont

www.tedxfremont.com What food habits do all great civilizations have in common? John McDougall suggests that starch-based diets are the foods humans were born to eat. He has been studying, writing, and speaking out about the effects of nutrition on disease for over 40 years and is a bestselling author of several titles, including The Starch Solution.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  1. Don't waste your time listening to this. It may in fact be true, but that's beside the point. What is the point, is that he talked for 17 minutes without stating one single useful piece of information, or reason for any statement he made. Added to that, some of the statements he made about early human diets is incorrect – man has always been a hunter as well as a gatherer, and has always eaten meat as well as plants and roots – that is what science has found.

  2. Due to the fact that Americans are all of different descent, who have prior to being here, evolved in different countries for thousands of years to eat different foods, and are currently eating foods they haven't evolved to eat, they have health issues due to not being able to process these foreign foods. I have a high intolerance to potatoes, if I have vodka for example, literally just a small drink, I will puke ALL NIGHT, like 50 times and sweat profusely, which is the same thing my family members experience. Reason being, potatoes contain an alkaloid basically its like acid and many people have trouble processing it, so I'm not entirely sure why he's recommending a food thats practically poisonous? Anyways, a lot of people that have inflammation from potatoes and other things in the nightshade family, which is predominantly poisonous ("nonpoisonous" also includes tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, tobacco), are unsure why that is as it leads to other more serious issues. Of course, on a genetic level, everyone reacts differently to different foods. For example, many asians haven't mutated in order to have dairy, so should they force themselves to eat a westernized diet? Obviously not. Should anyone in my family eat nightshade? Also no. What I found in my personal life is a lot of my redhead friends eat a vegetarian diet. There could be a correlation between them thriving on a diet that was easily assessable in Ireland, which would be high vegetation, the green terrain of Ireland proves this. My point is, know your heritage so you can know your diet. If we could accept the fact that we are all genetically different, which goes to say that no race is superior, we could accept that while one diet might work for one person, it might not work for you.

  3. it's funny that just before this video I watched another ted talk that says the opposite..
there is no diet for humans, we all are different, we need unique, personal diets, that are tailored to us.

  4. This is great. God said in the kjv Bible thousands of years ago that the herbs are for healing. You may fix your body but is your soul healed? Body lasts 100 years soul infinite. Therefore repent and put your trust in Jesus CHRIST to pay for your sins. See livingwaters on youtube they have cool free movies. Read your bible daily

  5. First sentence wrong! No food, no outside system, no drug, nothing but the body's inherent self reparitiive nature heals. Not starch, not protein, not exercise, not juice, not water, not nothing. Until we learn this truth, we will remain on the merry go round of lies from "experts" who sell the "true healthy diet".

  6. Just eat sensibly, a balanced diet, everything in moderation.  People try to be extreme with stuff these days, just aim for balance.  We need meat, maybe not everyday or every other but if you're active, meat should be consumed at least once every 3-4 days.  Be rational.

  7. The people of history might have been lean and strong but they died much younger still and were still plagued with disease that took many lives all the time. Not saying ur wrong, just saying that’s not a great example.
