People that get too excited about trains are known as ‘foamers’ in the industry. As in they foam at the mouth whenever they see a train.
Man, train people are weird.
I road the train to work for almost two years and never stopped being surprised by how many people with their camera set-ups would be hanging around the station on a Friday night filming the trains coming in. Whole families would be there. There was one old guy who must have published a book about it because he would be there every week, flipping through a copy and regaling a different trainspotter about somesuch.

Sadly it is fake. These are all fake. It is the general manager of the Railway who recreated a video of a 16 year old kid who was excited of trains but it’s a recreation and not the real thing.

Not sure why but at first I didn’t realize this is real life. Something about the colors and it being washed out a bit is making it look like some game.

I grew up in Cuba when its main economic activity was sugar production. My father was a machinist (train driver) so I rode these (maybe older) trains every day. I can still remember the smell of hot water with sugar and being on a train for hours. I remember I even knew them by sound even before you could see them. As the sugar industry died they started becoming attraction for tourists. We used to get a lot of Canadian tourists and I remember this one time a tourist, he looked like nothing I had ever seen, I think he was a native american (I was 8) called me and gave me a small codak roll [container](https://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/images2500x2500/General_Brand_161931_Plastic_Film_Canisters_With_743206.jpg) filled with coins. Getting a present from someone that looked so mysterious and strange made me so happy.

Few things in this world set off my ‘potential serial killer’ radar like a grown man into trains. The other is of course people with windowless vans who live in homes with dirt cellar floors!

On the one hand – Freud was right about boys and trains:) On the another – it’s a true passion that deserves to be respected
People often can’t comprehend why I like trains so much and they call it a pointless obsession. Then these same people will talk about a football match from the 1980s as if it were a landmark court decision.
