Fast food, Fat profits: Obesity in America | Fault Lines

Obesity in America has reached a crisis point. Two out of every three Americans are overweight, one out of every three is obese. One in three are expected to have diabetes by 2050.

Minorities have been even more profoundly affected. African-Americans have a 50 per cent higher prevalence of obesity and Hispanics 25 per cent higher when compared with whites.

How did the situation get so out of hand?

On this week’s episode of Fault Lines, Josh Rushing explores the world of cheap food for Americans living at the margins.

What opportunities do people have to eat healthy? Who is responsible for food deserts and processed food in American schools?

Fault Lines finds food revolutions taking place and speaks with the people that are fighting back.

  1. At my grocery store one apple can range from 1.50-3.00. So a bag of 5 apples can be 8-15 dollars. Everyone has to remember that we all don’t live in the same area and have the same opportunities. No, I’m not justifying eating fast food constantly but it can be expensive for some people.

  2. If you are to sell sugary drinks like that for 1.30 $ then yes your people are going to buy then without even looking. It cost us Malaysian 10-15 ringgit per bottle to buy one. We rather save that for a cup of tea tarik at the mamak restaurant.

  3. Jesus I am so glad that I am not living in America. where I am from the government would pay for the kidney doctor if I would be unable to pay. But it baffles me how you can even function on a diet based on McDonalds

  4. Exuse me, Someone help with homework and answer these questions:

1)What financial facts explain the existing popularity of fast food?
2)Which role does fast food play in New Orleans?
3)How many Americans suffer from obesity according to statistics?
4)Who influences the food policy in the US?
5)What measures are taken at schools to raise children`s awareness in the field of making the right food choice?

  5. The US is a third world country in almost every aspect compared to the Netherlands. That small country is so well developed in forwarding creative thinking. Everything is so well organized and now stress.

  6. Whatever. Muslim "news channel" bashing America – go figure. I average 25 days a month at The Gym. Those are 2 hour workouts with cardio (10-14 miles on the bike) & strength training. Havent set foot inside a Taco Bell, Burger King, Wendy's, KFC or McDonalds in years. Prince Habooboo got nothing on this American.
