Urban Agroecoloy: 6,000 lbs of food on 1/10th acre – Urban Homestead – Urban Permaculture

Go to to join the Food Abundance movement.

Over 6,000 pounds of food per year, on 1/10 acre located just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. The Dervaes family grows over 400 species of plants, 4,300 pounds of vegetable food, 900 chicken and 1,000 duck eggs, 25 lbs of honey, plus seasonal fruits throughout the year.

From 1/10th of an acre, four people manage to get over 90% of their daily food and the family reports earnings of $20,000 per year (AFTER they eat from what is produced). This is done without the use of the expensive & destructive synthetic chemicals associated with industrial mono-cropping, while simultaneously improving the fertility and overall condition of the land being used to grow this food on. Scaled up to an acre, that would equal $200,000 per year!

Urban and near-urban farming can be highly productive, causing whatever size of land you have to work with to produce with more abundance. It is time to solve hunger worldwide, through creating local food abundance…. Anyone can do it, once you learn how.

  1. I love to live like this infact British homes all way up to now. But more in 60/70/80s every back garden use to grow there own.. My grandad for 1.. Now it all fast food or proses foods. Yuck.. I live in flat now but if I ever get a garden ill grow my own food..

  2. The food was recalled because it was genetically modified at 3 07 I believe the reporter got that wrong hehe. It might have been recalled cause they were bad but not genetically modified.

  3. Wow this is amazing everybody should do this. Grow your own veggies and chickens for meat and eggs. In this movie everybody is happy, the human and the animals. This is great! We love the grow your own idea as well ??? kind regards Monique

  4. My dream has always been to start a homestead, self-sufficient village too. One day, it will happen. I even went to truck driving school just to pay for some acreage and buy supplies for my first tiny house. Plus, recycling and saving wood and other scraps from the landfill. Ask and you'd be surprised what companies are willing to give away.

  5. This is a FANTASTIC VIDEO.
I've been doing this for 51 years in San Diego.
My extra production goes to our local senior citizens center.
High Five to ALL of you !!!
    ..
Fyi: Be careful, Your no longer allowed to say your produce is "Organic" unless you have been licensed by the Gubberment.
    It's Illegal
And too bad about the unfounded claim of climate change
    …lol
Yep ! Four seasons of climate change.
    Winter
    Spring
    Summer
    And Fall

  6. This is one of the first ones I've seen where I really believe this is doable. They really set up an amazing modern homestead, it's sad the government doesn't want this do to the money the giant billion dollar companies would lose. I heard even in places like cali where they paint lawns green due to water shortage you can't collect rain water legally….

  7. I made some calculations
    Terrain : 400 sqare meters (m2)
    Production : 2700 kg
    Prod per ha (10.000 m2) : 67.500 kg
    Prod per Km2 (100 ha ) : 6700 Metric Tones

How many people can survive on this farm?
    1. It is had to determine the calories per kg because not all veggies and fruit have the same caloric density, but I will make a median of 2 veggies (potatoes 800 cals/kg and spinach 200 cals/kg) and 1 fruit (any fruit 500 cals/kg) . Median will be 500 calories/kg
    2. A human will eat 2200 calories/day or 803.000 calories/ year
    3. How many kg per person . 803.000 cals : 500 = 1600 kg/person
    4. How many people can these farm feed ? 1.7 people

    Conclusion :
    1. It can't sustain a family of 4 people let alone sell the exes produce.
    2. It needs 2 people (at least) to feed 2 people.
    3. They yield is impressive and therefore is not real or to expensive to implement it on a larger scale.
    4. Doesn't show how much water/energy it's using. And using more manual labour that means one needs more people to work.

    Other :
    1. 90% (or more) of the calories are from cereals the rest are veggies/fruit. Why is that? Because you need 1 kwh to produce 1 kg of wheat that has 3250 calories ,1.5 kwh to produce 1 kg of apples that have 500 calories, 1.5 kwh to produce a kg of green veggies that have 250 calories. That is almost 10 times (fruit) to 20 times more energy than wheat, but we fuck it up by using wheat to make meat, (beef uses 25 times more energy, but chickens use 7 times energy).
So to feed the entire world only with veggies one needs 20 times more energy.

    Just for fun :
How many people can a Ha sustain and how much land is needed to feed the entire world?
    1. People/ha : (67.500 x 500 ) : 803.000/person = 42 people/ha
    2. Feed the world : 7.000.000.000 : 42 = 166.666.667 Ha or 1.666..667 Km2
At the moment agriculture is using 5.000.000 km2 to produce the food needed for 15.000.000.000 people if we were vegans.
So this type of farming will do the same job but with 3.600.000 km2 or 72% of the land needed.
