Why footage with artificial light in Europe looks different if you use an American smartphone
Haven’t watched it yet, but I’m assuming its because of the 50hz rate of alternating current affecting the lighting vs America’s 60hz rate. Similarly, USA uses a 30/60 framerate as typical for capturing video while Europe uses 25/50 fps. So if you take an American-standard camera and shoot video in europe, or vice-versa, there will be an oscilation syncronization difference.
I’ll take the higher frames and an occasional lighting issue over lower frames.

tom scott: *insert title of any of his videos*
Not just Europe.
According to Wikipedia: A voltage of (nominally) 230 V and a frequency of 50 Hz is used in Europe, most of Africa, most of Asia, much of South America and Australia. In North America, the most common combination is 120 V and a frequency of 60 Hz.
So get your voltage up America, jeez.
I like how Tom doesn’t try to pad his vids to 10 mins and just gets to the point.
So if the camera and the light run at 50hz, why dont we get half of the time full light, and half of the time dim light?
50 Hz vs 60 Hz. Saved you a click

Throm So
Damn thought i didn’t get the notification for a tom scott video then got a few seconds in and it all sounded very familiar jan 2014….. Man we’re old now
The really silly thing about this is how easy it’d be to fix… why aren’t the smartphone makers just including a 50/60Hz switch like every cheap CCD webcam ever made?
This dude sounds like he is the reporter on the scene of a massacre or building collapse. Relax, man.
so are you telling me that the light bulb turns on and off 100 times per second? because that doesn’t make much sense.
Ah Tom, making me care about things I never thought I’d care about
Does that mean European phones record at 25/50 fps or something? Why does he say only American phones will cause this effect??
